The Transitive Vampire: A Handbook for the Innocent, the Eager, and the Doomed by Karen Elizabeth Gordon is a quick read to familiarize yourself with basic grammar. As you may have guessed from the title, this book uses a gothic theme to bring grammar to life with examples that are far from ordinary. Some examples are cited under the Sentence Structures heading of the main Crafting Clear Sentences and Understanding Errors page.

Grammar Lessons You'll Love to Teach: Highly Motivating Lessons - With Pizazz - That Help Kids Become More Effective Readers, Writer, and Thinkers by Ruth Townsend Story and Cathleen F. Greenwood. is a great book for lesson ideas and different strategies and games to interest kids in grammar. The lessons are intended for grade 6 and up, but even if you are teaching significantly older grades, the lessons can be adapted and the book has a lot of good ideas.

Teaching English in Middle and Secondary Schools by Rhoda J. Maxwell and Mary Jordan Meiser is another great reference for grammar lessons. This book, however, includes lessons pertaining to composition and many other avenues of the language arts.

Essential English Grammar by Philip Gucker is not the best grammar reference, but it is extensive. Though confusing at times, this book seems to have a definition for anything you could ever need to know about grammar and ample examples.
